While we were sitting up stairs yesterday evening, someone smashed in one of the office windows and stole my iBook from off my desk. It happened within all of 10 seconds.

A police officer was promptly on the scene to take a report. He made some snide remark about all our computer equipment being so... visible.

What concerned me most and caused me to breakdown in the end, was that all my stored passwords in Firefox might be retrieved. I've sorted everything out I hope.

The first piece of software that I will be installing, when I get a new laptop, is Undercover. I'll also have to make breaking in less attractive and move the office around.

Once bitten. Twice shy.

Talk back!
Nevermind my previous question, I read that story by Sedaris..

that is terrible Rachel, glad you have insurance.
And, uh, what is the story behind this picture?
NeilMon 27 Nov 2006, 6:31 PM CEST

That sucks! I've had my ibook stolen too, although nearly not as dramatically as yours. Fortunately I gave the police the serial of the computer, and the guy was caught when he tried to sell it to a (reputable) pawnshop.

I got lucky, but you might too :D

Nogger, true, but the blinds where closed, we we were upstairs having dinner. Fact is that we have an office. So it's quite logical to have computers, and as we try to make use of as much space as possible we had a desk against a window.

Like a local lady said: It's not about you having to prevent it from happening, it's about them keeping their filthy hands off your property.

Not nice being robbed. Unfortunately, the police officer is right. A lot of thieves are opportunists, so it's best not to offer them one.

oh rachel, i am so sorry! glad you have insurance, but boy what a pain. i hope you had all your work etc. backed-up. my camera being stolen was one thing..and bad enough...but if my laptop got stolen..oi.

If the thief had been smart, he would have taken the power cord, the Airport Extreme and the cordless mouse that were also always in sight.

I'm convinced that it was someone who had taken notice of the fact that my iBook always sat in the same spot in front of window pane.

About Undercover, if the thieve is smart -and some are- he/she will reformat and re-install the OS. My bet is that would make Undercover worthless. Having a laptop stolen from me once as well, I know how it feels (no data was on mine). Sorry for your loss.

*squeals*

We had a break-in in our building not too long ago. The jerks pulled over a recycling bin and robbed one of our neighbors.

My MacBook is in plain view from our windows, and Rik always wonders why I keep the curtains closed. But maybe I shouldn't be lulled into such a false sense of security.

I hope they catch the summab*tch who did this to you.

That is such a shame. I do hope they can not only track down your iBook, but also the creep that stole it. Here's another thought: Setup a in-house stand along machine w/web cam(s) aimed at windows/doors w/sound activation, etc., that uploads the pics to a remote machine via FTP. Doesn't stop a theif, but can catch their actions. And face.

It was insured. We'll see what happens. Right now we have to wait until we get a copy of the police report before we can really do anything.
RachelWed 22 Nov 2006, 6:34 PM CEST

That's terrible! I would DIE if something like that happened to my macbook.

Rachel i'm really sorry this happened. You're two nice and what the hell??

Did you have any kind of owners insurrance on it incase of any accidental theft or damages?
